Frequently Asked Questions about RV Awnings

1. How much is an RV awning?

An all-new, full awning replacement can cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000. It all depends on the quality of materials, the type of awning configuration and the size. Professional installation costs will raise the price. Remember, you get what you pay for, so the cheapest awning you can find usually isn’t the best option. If you want to replace just the awning fabric, you can expect to pay $200+.

2. How much does it cost to add an electric awning to an RV?

Expect to spend anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 if you’re looking to add an electric awning to your RV. As always, professional installation costs will raise the price.

3. Can I replace my RV awning fabric myself?

Replacing an awning isn’t for everyone, and you should seek professional assistance if you’re not completely confident in your ability to do the job. However, many RV owners choose to replace their patio awning as a DIY project. With just a few tools and the help of a friend, you can save time and money by not taking your RV into the shop or paying for a total awning replacement. Learn how to replace RV awning fabric here!

4. What is the best RV awning fabric?

You should try and find RV awning fabric that works for you and your needs. How much do you want to pay and how does that compare to the life expectancy of the fabric? If you’re a full-time RVer who plans to use the awning daily, it may be worth it to invest in a heavier-duty fabric, like canvas or acrylic. If you want to change out your fabric color every few years or only plan to use your RV part-time, then you should be able to get away vinyl. In any case, RV awning maintenance and care is essential to making your awning last.

5. Are RV awnings worth it?

RV awnings, whether they are patio, window or slide-out configurations, are a great addition for RV owners who plan to park their rig in sunny areas, which is highly likely. Awnings provide shade and protection against the outdoor elements, which is a needed respite for most RVers.

6. Are electric awnings worth it?

RV owners seem to be divided in their opinions about electric awnings. Some say they are expensive and would rather not worry about another electronic component on their RV. Others say electric awnings are worth it because they save the owner from unnecessary manual labor, are easy to use and often come equipped with smart features, like auto-retraction when it’s windy outside.

7. Should an RV awning be in or out for rain?

Ultimately, RV awnings are made for shade. You can cause damage to your awning components if you keep it extended during heavy rain or wind. For light rain, you can leave it extended as long as you set the pitch at an angle that will allow for proper water runoff. If you let water pool on top of your awning while it rains, your awning fabric will begin to stretch and sag, and you could cause damage to the awning assembly arms.

8. How long does it take to install an RV awning?

While it depends on your experience level, you can generally install a complete RV awning assembly from start to finish in about four to five hours. If you want to replace just the awning fabric, expect it to take one to two hours.

9. Can I convert my manual awning to electric?

With a manual-to-power awning conversion kit, you have the ability to convert your manual awning to electric. These kits convert manual spring tension awnings to a spring-free power awning in a few simple steps. Then, you can extend and retract your patio awning with the simple push of a button.
